I've got this amazing Mauritian friend and his birthday is coming up soon. Usually I wish him in English on Facebook (or Japanese when I want to tease him!!!) but this year I'd like to make an effort and say it in his mother-tongue. What's the best way to go about it?

All you have to do is say **Bonaniverserr**.

This comes from the French phrase "Bonne Anniversaire" but is spelt differently.

Listen to the audio below for the pronunciation:

boh-nah-nee-veer-sheer

Some people however will say **zwaye-zaniverserr** and again this derives from "Joyeux Anniversaire" in French.

The following contextual sentences may be useful:

  • Bonaniverserr Carl (don't use Carl if that's not the name of your friend!)
  • Bonaniverr sheri (sheri/coco/gate all mean darling)
  • Mo swett twa bonaniverserr (I wish you a happy birthday)
  • Mo p avoy twa enn cado laniverserr (I'm sending you a birthday gift)
  • Ki gato tonn manze pou to laniverserr (What cake did you eat for your birthday)
  • Ki tonn fer pou to laniverserr (What did you do for your birthday)
  • Bonaniverserr an-retar (Happy belated birthday); not a very good friend if you forgot to wish them on the day though.
  • To laniverserr kan? (When's your birthday?)
